Desktop Virtualization

Down with Desktop costs

Desktop Virtualization will be one of the key IT trends in the coming years: numerous companies are attracted by the possibility of using data centers to provide personalized user environments as services. With XenDesktop, Citrix has developed the most comprehensive solution for the central and secure provision of virtual Windows Desktops. Companies that use this solution can reduce overall costs for their user Desktops by up to 40 percent.

Here are the products we recommend for your Desktop Virtualization:

Citrix XenDesktop

Citrix XenDesktop 3.0: the new generation of Desktop Virtualization

XenDesktop 3.0 is the latest release of the XenDesktop product family launched by Citrix. This solution is now more effective than ever thanks to numerous new features, such as the direct provision of Desktop Images on physical terminals, e.g. PCs. All of which makes XenDesktop the only solution that incorporates both virtual Desktops in the data center and physical terminals into Desktop Provisioning. XenDesktop 3 extends the range of user support with new functions such as Windows Media acceleration and support for USB devices. Increased security is provided through the support of Smart Card readers.

The key new functions at a glance:

  • Desktop Provisioning for terminals:
XenDesktop is the only solution which can use virtual Desktops in the data center and local Desktops on terminals based on the same central image. This means that there are no costs for storage and management of different  individual Desktop Images. For Power Users, who need the dedicated processing power of their local PC, XenDesktop can provide a central image via the LAN, making optimum use of the terminal's CPU, RAM and graphic processor resources.

  • HD-X Windows Media acceleration and USB support:
USB support allows the user to use many typical USB devices (memory sticks, iPods, Smartphones, keyboards etc.) on their virtual Desktops. HD-X Windows Media acceleration ensures outstanding multimedia reproduction, since the terminal is used for the rendering of streaming media.

  • Maximum scalability:
The Server Virtualization technology supplied slashes the costs for the Desktop Hosting infrastructure. Compared to earlier versions, a single Server can host twice as many virtual Desktops, while offering unchanged performance on the bare metal level. Double scalability also applies to the XenServer resource pool, which now also allows support of large user groups without any problems whatsoever.

  • Portable Profiles:
The Portable Profile Manager separates a user's personal settings from the applications, from the Desktop and from each terminal, meaning that they can be assigned dynamically at any time, irrespective of the access device or location. Portable Profiles play a decisive role when it comes to achieving maximum cost efficiency by using a small number of uniform images, while still allowing the users to personalize the virtual Desktops. This technology ensures that the personal settings and preferences follow the users from session to session, device to device, and location to location. In addition to this, the Portable Profile Manager is used to check and control the escalation of user profiles. It therefore accelerates the registration process and reduces the risk of profile corruption during the transfer.

  • Smart Card support:
XenDesktop 3 now also supports the use of Smart Card authentication for Windows Desktops, therefore meeting a common security requirement of many companies.

VMware View

Give Users a High Performance Virtual Desktop Experience

Let users access their virtual desktops from a wide variety of devices thick, thin or mobile—without any performance degradation. On LAN or WAN connections, VMware View 4 with PCoIP delivers a high performance desktop experience, even over high latency and low bandwidth connections. Choose from several multi-monitor configurations, play rich multi-media and easily connect to peripheral devices. And since desktops are tied to user’s identities and not devices, user’s desktops follow the user from device to device for ultimate freedom and mobility.

Manage and deliver virtual desktops through a single console for improved desktop management and fast provisioning. Respond to mergers, reorgs, and expansion faster than ever before. Deliver greater levels of availability by maintaining and delivering virtual desktops, applications and data from the data center. Improve security and keep applications up to date with better patch management and centrally managed security policies.

Key Features and Capabilities:

  • Simplified Desktop Management
Desktop and application virtualization breaks the bonds between software, hardware and operating systems, eliminating the need to actually install or manage desktop environments on end user devices. From a central location you can deliver, manage and update all of your Windows desktops and applications in minutes. VMware View makes the testing, provisioning and support of applications and desktops much easier and less costly.

  • Automated Desktop Provisioning
Through View Manager 4, VMware View provides a single management tool to provision new desktops or groups of desktops, and an easy interface for setting desktop policies. Using a template, you can customize virtual pools of desktops and easily set policies, such as how many virtual machines can be in a pool, or logoff parameters. This feature enables greater IT efficiency by automating and centralizing desktop provisioning activities.

  • Advanced Virtual Desktop Image Management
Based on the mature Linked Clone technology, View Composer enables the rapid creation of desktop images from a master image. Whatever updates are implemented on the parent image can be pushed out to any number of virtual desktops in minutes, greatly simplifying deployment and patches and reducing costs. The process does not affect user settings, data or applications, so the user remains productive on a working desktop, even while the changes are being applied.

  • Superior End User Experience
Address the broadest range of use cases and deployment options with VMware View’s PCoIP desktop display protocol, and deliver a high-performance desktop experience, even over high latency and low bandwidth connections. PCoIP’s adaptive technology is optimized for the delivery of virtual desktops to users on the LAN or over the WAN. VMware View gives users access to their virtual desktops over a wide variety of virtual desktop devices, without any performance degradation, anytime. They can also play rich media content, choose from any number of monitor configurations and seamlessly access locally attached peripheral devices such as scanners and mass storage.

  • Built-in Security
Maintain control over data and intellectual property by keeping it secure in the data center. End users can access their personalized desktop, complete with applications and data, from any location, at any time without jeopardizing the corporate security policies. Optional integration with RSA SecurID for 2 factor authentication avialble.

  • Availability and Scalability
VMware View delivers high availability, with no single point of failure. VMware High Availability (HA) ensures automatic failover and provides pervasive, cost-effective protection within your virtualized desktop environment, without the cost or complexity of traditional clustering solutions. Additionally, advanced clustering capabilities on the physical and virtual layers provide enterprise-class scalability with no single point of failure.

  • Streamlined Application Management
VMware ThinApp application virtualization separates applications from underlying operating systems for increased compatibility and streamlined application management. Applications packaged with ThinApp can be run in the data center and accessible through a shortcut on the virtual desktop, reducing the size of the desktop image and subsequent storage needs. Since ThinApp isolates and virtualizes applications, multiple applications or multiple versions of the same applications run on users’ virtual desktops without conflict. Applications are managed and deployed centrally, ensuring that all users desktops are up-to-date with the latest application versions.
