System Center Operations Manager (SCOM 2007 R2)
The key advantage of Operations Manager as a central monitoring tool lies in the know-how that Microsoft and other manufacturers have integrated into the Management Packs.
SCOM can monitor the Blade System and the HP Server directly with the appropriate HP Management Packs.
Hardware failures and warnings can therefore be viewed directly in Operations Manager. Monitoring of disk arrays such as MSA is likewise possible. Following the recent release of SCOM 2007 R2 (generally available from July 1, 2009), other operating systems such as Linux or Unix can also be monitored using the Cross Platform Module (More info. here).
Simple Visio-Integration provides another feature. Many companies already use Visio diagrams to depict the IT environment. A Microsoft Add-In allows each object in a Visio diagram to be linked with an object in SCOM. By way of example, this means that the PC or the service in the diagram can change from green to red as soon as the monitoring system detects an error.
To enable monitoring of other systems such as SAP or VMWare vCenter, various manufacturers offer their own Management Packs, which can be integrated into SCOM directly.
